Ebony, bone inlay
39 x 36 x 18 in (99.1 x 91.4 x 45.7 cm)

A breathtaking and extremely rare Art Deco ebony sideboard with bone inlay and exquisite foliate carving on the doors and sides, resting on four carved ball feet. Non-exportable Lot.

The Art Deco period, commencing in the 1920s saw "diverse influences at work, including the ancient civilizations of Egypt, Greece and mexico, primitive Africa and exotic Asia. It was as if designers of the period saw the whole history of the world and every culture within it as ripe for the picking" (David Linley, Charles Cator and Helen Chislett, "Art Deco", Star Pieces: The Enduring Beauty of Spectacular Furniture, Thames and Hudson, London, 2009, p. 184).

The present lot suggests an Art Deco interpretation of the Mughal style. While few examples of Mughal furniture remain, the intricate patterns, stylized floral motifs and inlay work that are characteristic of Mughal design have been a source of inspiration for generations of artists, furniture designers, and architects across the world.
