In the early 18th century, the region of Mewar produced several albums illustrating various epics. Apart from the well?known ones, several others like tales from the Panchatantra, Bhakti Ratnavali, Shakunavalli, etc. were also illustrated. This particular painting highlights an episode after the Ashwamedha Yagna (an ancient Vedic ritual), wherein Arjuna is killed by his own son Babhruvahana. In this pictorial depiction Babhruvahana is shown begging forgiveness from the Pandavas and Kunti, his grandmother. Arjuna was later brought to life with a gemstone obtained from the snakes, the nagas, who are seen in the bottom register of the painting, beneath the surface of the ocean. The use of primary colours, compartmentalization and a moving story pattern typical of this era and region, make it an even more captivating fragment of an illustrious album
