Henry Prinsep was employed at the age of 16 as writer with the East India Company in Calcutta. He later joined the staff of the Marquis of Hastings and accompanied him on his tour through Oudh and the North-Western Provinces. He served on Hastings’ staff during the Gurkha and Pindari campaigns and through the end of the Mahratta war, when he obtained the Governor-General's permission to write his narrative.

Prinsep covers some accounts of very important changes and transactions that occurred in India between 1814-1819. These mostly include political and military transactions. He presents an introduction to the state of India on the arrival of Governor-General Lord Moira. He was the first Marquess of Hastings. This book has 18 chapters that include the events of Nipal-Mahrattas, Hyderabad-Poona, Nipalese- Pindarees, Bhopal-Nagpoor, Jypoor, Pindarese, Nagpoor-Poona.

Prinsep was brother of James Prinsep.
