EXHIBITION - Sadanand Bakre: An Exhibition (Feb 11-Mar 11, 2023) :

Born in Baroda in 1920, Sadanand Bakre was one of the founders of the Bombay Progressive Artists’ Group and remembered fondly as a modern innovator. Rudy Von Leyden, a leading art critic, took notice of Bakre’s talent, encouraging and introducing him to the modernist art movements in America and Europe. With an ever-growing interest in the exploration of form, Bakre went on to define his own style of abstraction in the decade of the 1960s. His quest manifested in a unique expression of form, one that was shown and appreciated at several significant galleries in Europe and Mumbai. After some time spent in Europe, the artist eventually returned to India in the 1980s and settled down in the Konkan region of Maharashtra, where he died in 2007.

Saffronart is delighted to present an exhibition of works by the celebrated modernist, Sadanand Bakre, renowned for his innovative forms and sculpting techniques. This diverse collection, spanning the genres of sculpture, painting, drawing and more, throws light on the artist’s journey that moved from the trajectory of realism towards abstraction. The works on paper exhibited allow one to interpret Bakre’s artistic process of creating unconventional forms alongside exceptional pieces of sculpture and painting.
