THE CURATED AUCTION SERIES (19-20 APRIL 2021) : ABOUT THE AUCTION

The Curated Auction Series

Saffronart is excited to present the first iteration in a new series of curated auctions, where we invite noted individuals from the world of Indian art to handpick works for our sales. The 40 lots in this auction have been carefully selected by Nakul Dev Chawla, founder and CEO of Global Art Hub, a unique online platform connecting galleries with art collectors and buyers. Chawla comes from a long line of gallerists that began with his grandfather D V Chawla who founded Chawla Art Gallery in 1967, which is now run by Nakul’s mother Shibani.

Through his selection of the works in this sale, Chawla offers an artistic and curatorial perspective that spans the gamut of early to late modern Indian art: from pre-modern artists such as M V Dhurandhar and Bengal School artists Nandalal Bose and Ramkinkar Baij, to modern masters including Bombay Progressives M F Husain, F N Souza, S H Raza, Jehangir Sabavala, Ram Kumar, Akbar Padamsee and Krishen Khanna, as well as Jagdish Swaminathan, Somnath Hore, G R Santhosh and many others. The highlight of the sale is a rare and remarkable masterpiece by Tyeb Mehta — a figurative painting from his iconic ‘rickshaw-puller’ series, executed in his mature style with fragmented, intersecting colour planes that capture the fragility and anguish of the human condition.

With this sale, and many others to follow, we continue to reaffirm our commitment to highlighting our 5,000-year-old rich aesthetic legacy, while bringing you the very best of Indian art.
