Wood
18th Century

Kerala

Length: 57 in (144.8 cm)

This elaborate carved wooden panel originates from old architecture. It would have occupied the space above a doorway.

This solid wooden panel has deep three-dimensional work. Yalis and Ganas are shown in various postures. Yalis are mythical lions said to ward off evil. Ganas are dwarfs who guard Shiva's chamber. They are stout, with large pot bellies and sport large moustaches. It is interesting to note the manner in which the carving has been done. Keeping in mind the elevation, the ganas are shown emerging from the bottom and looking upwards. The shape, patina, subject and depth make it an interesting piece.

This object was originally one of a pair. The corresponding piece was sold through this auction house in the sale 'Indian Antiquities and Miniature Paintings' held on April 25-26, 2012 (lot 54).
