A pair of 15-inch globes representing the terrestrial and celestial landscape, each resting in mahogany tripod stands supported by brass castors. Compasses are set in the base of each stand to complete the design. The globes tilt at an angle of 90 degrees for ease of viewing with solid brass meridian rings. Both globes bear the seal and inscription of Newton & Son. Non-exportable Lot.

The manufacture of terrestrial globes became widespread in the 16th and 17th centuries in Europe, most probably with a growing interest in discovering new lands and deploying mercenaries to colonise those lands. Globes were viewed as a far more accurate representation of the world than maps, as they could provide a geometrically proportionate image of the planet. Celestial globes were, on the other hand, represent important constellations marked as they would appear in the skies. Globes manufactured by important globe makers have since been viewed as a status symbol.

Founded by John Newton in the early 1800s in London with origins traced as far back as 1780, the firm of J & W Newton later traded under the name of W. Newton & Son and sometimes as Newton & Son.
