Deepalakshmi

Bronze
Early 18th Century

Tamil Nadu

Height: 20.5 in (52.1 cm)

This is a finely sculpted standing lady holding a lamp in her hand. She is tall and slender, standing on a high base, with an inscription in the Tamil script.

The lady has her hair neatly tied in a small bun, behind her head. She has large expressive eyes, beautifully curved eyebrows, a sharp nose and smiling face. Her upper body is bare and her lower garment falls neatly in multiple folds up to her ankles. She wears a gold choker with a round pendant and a necklace with a pendant, reaching her belly. She also wears thick armbands, wristbands and anklets. The lady has large ears and wears ring-like earrings.

She holds a lamp with both her hands, extended outwards in a welcoming posture. The lamp has a large basin which enables the wick to burn longer. Unlike most bronze icons this piece is large in size. The subject is auspicious and the piece being functional can be put to use.
