The Southern state of Kerala produced great bronzes in ancient times. Unlike Tamil bronzes the ones from Kerala were much smaller in size. The larger Kerala bronzes measure around 6 to 8 inches in height with the largest ones going up to around a foot and a half. The style was unique and distinct. The figures are full bodied and ornamentation is lavish.

This sculpture is that of Vaishnavi, the female aspect of Vishnu. One can see her in her usual four-armed form standing gracefully. She wears an ornate crown and is adorned with jewellery. She is identified by the attributes she holds, namely the 'shankha' and 'chakra' in her upper hands. These are derived from her counterpart Vishnu. Her lower right hand is in the 'varada mudra', offering a boon, and her lower left hand is in the 'abhaya mudra' or the attitude of protection. A ring-like nimbus signifying her importance has been shown behind her head. Vaishnavi's upper body is bare except for a breast band. Her lower vestment is a beautifully draped garment, like a sari, almost reaching her ankles, the ends of which fall by the side of her waist onto the base on which she stands. She sports large cylindrical ear ornaments. Her expression is pleasant, and her body is realistically modeled and full in typical tradition. The sculpture has a good dark bronze patina and is large, complete and grips the viewer.
