PROVENANCE
Formerly in the Collection of the Late Historian Colonel Raj Kumar Tandan
Private Collection, Mumbai

This rare sculpture shows two heads and would have once been part of a larger panel. The head to the viewer’s right has a benign smile and seems to look towards the other figure. All the facial features distinct to the Kushan dynasty, like prominent eyes, small lips, etc. are visible. The headgear worn by the figure to the left is very intriguing and points to how this work might be part of a broader narrative panel and not a singular Buddha or Bodhisattva. This is an important example of Kushan sculpture and a crucial part of that history.
