SEATED AYYANAR

Kerala has produced great bronze figures since ancient times. Unlike Tamil bronzes, the ones from Kerala were much smaller in size, usually measuring 6 to 8 inches in height with the largest ones going up to around a foot and a half. The style was unique and distinct, with the figures being full bodied and lavishly ornamented.

The present lot shows Ayyanar, a guardian deity worshipped across Kerala and parts of Tamil Nadu, believed to be the son of Lord Shiva. This bronze is noteworthy for being larger than typical Kerala bronze sculptures from the era.
