STANDING VISHNU


"In Hindu mythology Vishnu is first and foremost a savior, sweeping down from his lofty abode to bring peace and balance to a beleaguered earth. Sometimes he remains in his heavenly abode while saving the day: four armed, holding a discus and a conch shell.” (Joan Cummins ed., Vishnu: Hinduism’s Blue Skinned Saviour, Ahmedabad: Mapin Publishing, 2011, p. 11)

The present lot depicts Vaikunta Vishnu, widely worshipped in areas around the Kulu Valley from the 9th to the 14th century AD. On either side of the standing deity are delicately done lion and boar heads, that are smaller in size than other examples from the era.
