Ever since his visit to Varanasi in 1960, Ram Kumar has journeyed from cityscapes to abstract landscapes.... "There is an enigmatic mystery about the inner life of a colour applied on canvas. Ever since his visit to Varanasi in 1960, Ram Kumar has journeyed from cityscapes to abstract landscapes. "The counterpoint between city and landscape has long exercised Ram Kumar: to shuttle between them is to know and traverse the discontinuity between home and world. The city, shored up from river-silt, vulnerable to the river's sullen tides and periodic floods, would appear to symbolise the life of the householder... The landscape, on the other hand, with its drifts of ice and sand, suggests the open breadth of the cosmos, where the renouncer may wander at will." (Gagan Gill ed., Ram Kumar: A Journey Within, New Delhi: Vadehra Art Gallery, 1996, p. 40) The present lot is an abstract landscape which evokes the feeling of a "place" which may be Varanasi, without any figuration that might suggest a specific location.
