Padamsee is well known for his depiction of human figures often delineated in monochromatic tones that lend them a luminous quality. In Padamsee's oeuvre, physical characteristics come to symbolize general human traits. Tellingly, the solitary figure in Head is invested with a saintly air. As the melancholy, Christ-like visage is flooded with a strange, almost ethereal light, we are made aware that it is the persistence of human suffering rather than a specific individual's agony that is being represented.
This work is part of a series done in sepia in the late 1990s and early 2000s, where the artist uses the subtle gradations in tone to explore the transcendental nature of reality. The artist says that the blending of colors in this series of tertiary works lends him "another quality of time…. where the non-dual is built into the system, opening the way from the finite to the infinite." (p. 1, Akbar Padamsee, The Tertiaries, Pundole Art Gallery, Exhibition Catalogue, 2002)
