A PAIR OF 'POKHANI' EAR CLIPS

Gold and diamond

20th century
Saurashtra, Gujarat

Typically worn in the distended earlobes of women from the Bharvad community in Saurashtra, 'pokhani' earrings have many variants. These conical ones, which resemble reels, are worn by the Nanabhai subgroup of the Bharvads. They are decorated with concentric rings of fine granulation, rope work and other applied forms. This particular pair of ear studs has been modified by kundan-setting each with a central table-cut 'polki' diamond.
