Four-Armed Dancing Ganesha

This Central Indian stone sculpture shows Ganesha in an ecstatic dance pose. The form is very unusual and portrays him dancing in a happy mood with his body resting on his toes. The upper two hands of this four-armed Ganesha are poised like those of a dancer. In his lower left hand which is seen above his upper left hand, he holds a ball of sweets. The end of his trunk goes into his mouth to place a sweet. His right lower hand rests on his hatchet, conveying peace. Ganesha is bare-bodied except for a short loin cloth, part of which falls in folds between his feet. His ears are leaf-shaped with very tapering lobes. In this form, he is not seen wearing a crown but instead has a flat headgear covering only the top of his head. The sculpture is in high relief. The dancing posture, lovely colour, small size and early dating make this a unique sculpture.
