Stone Head - Surya

Beige granite
10th Century

Early Chola Period

Height: 20 in (50.8 cm)
The worship of the Sun god is one of the oldest practices among religions across the globe. From the ancient Egyptians to the Romans and the Indians, all have revered this illuminant energy provider.

Rama is said to have been a Suryavanshi or a descendant of Surya. Karna, a hero from the Mahabharata, was said to have drawn lineage from the sun as well. Surya rides a seven horsed chariot driven by his charioteer Aruna.

This early Chola head of Surya would have once been part of a magnificent full bodied representation. The subject is very clear from the large nimbus that surrounds the head. On observation one can also see the tip of the lotus bud held in the hand protruding. These are characteristics typical of this deity. The ear-rings are large and cylindrical. The facial features are typical of the early phase of the Chola dynasty. A crown worthy of the deity adorns his head. The face has a very reassuring smile. This sculpture not only has a rare subject but also has a very interesting and soothing colour tone. The stone is a beige granite with lovely hues of pink in various areas that accentuate the beauty.

Most stone heads are around 8 to 10 inches in height. It is very rare to find a head of such a magnificent size with a rare subject and of such an early period.

Surya, one of the earliest deities is considered to be the preserver of life and the center of creation and well-being.
