Louis Valtat was born in Normandy in 1869 to a wealthy family of ship owners. Encouraged by his father, an amateur painter himself, the young Valtat chose to follow a career as an artist and left for Paris in 1887. There he quickly befriended his contemporaries Pierre Bonnard and Edouard Vuillard, who at that time were establishing the Nabis movement.
