Aniket Khupse’s sensitive lines and multiple layers constantly shuffle the viewer between various tenses – past, present and future. In his images, made up of people and situations, Khupse freezes his focal content in the present while the many layers, above and below, maintain a fluid representation between past and future.
His colours are transparent and his lines meander carefully within his frame. While darker blotches of paint create a sense of depth, the more watered down pigments appear as sheer layers over the surface. Khupse’s formal training in portraiture becomes evident in fine lines drawn with obvious conviction.
Aniket Khupse was born in Maharashtra and received his BFA in Drawing and Painting from the Sir J J School of Art, Mumbai, in 1998, then went on to receive his MFA in Portraiture from the same college in the year 2000. He has won several awards for his work including the R. Mistry Memorial Prize for Graphic Art from the Art Society of India, and the Dolly Cursetjee Prize and the Gladstone Solomon Prize given by the Sir J.J. School of Art.
Khupse has participated in several exhibitions over the years, the most recent including ‘Point of View’, Mumbai, in 2007; Asia Fusion Art Gallery, New York, in 2006; 'Impression of India' at Easel Art Gallery, Singapore, in 2006; 'Pride Of Maharashtra' at India Art Gallery, Pune, in 2006; 'Rhombic Rhythm' at Museum Art Gallery, Mumbai, in 2005; and '100 Contemporary Indian Artists: a Benefit for Children affected by HIV / AIDS’ at Joss, Mumbai, also in 2005.
The artist lives and works in Kharghar, Navi Mumbai.
