PROVENANCE
Formerly in the Collection of Late Nalini and Haridas Swali
Private Collection, Mumbai

Thangkas were used for meditation and also for teaching and spreading awareness about the teachings of the Buddha. Monks would roll and carry them on their travels and often gift them to people they meet. In the 50s and 60s many collectors in Mumbai were fortunate to have acquired these due to the visiting monks from Tibet. In this particular example, Padmasambhava the preacher, is seen seated atop the copper mountain within his there-storied palace. His manifestations are seen below him. In the upper register we can see divinities who have gathered to witness the spectacle. At the bottom earthly beings are shown. Padmasambhava’s teachings are said to have convinced Emperor Asoka to adopt Buddhism. Examples of this subject are hard to come by.
