A captivating frieze in polished grey schist showing three Buddhas seated within their royal chambers. The central figure has an important subject – the first sermon given by Buddha on attaining enlightenment. He is seen seated in bhumisparsha mudra wherein he calls the earth to become a witness to his victory. The adjoining two figures are in dharmachakra mudra wherein he sets the wheel of law in motion. The bottom arch of the frieze features a prominent kirtimukha, a fierce lion like face used as a protective symbol in Buddhist art. The decorative framework reflects the architectural and sculptural richness of the Nalanda Tradition.
