CHINESE PÂTE-SUR-PÂTE PORCELAIN VASE

Porcelain
Height: 24.5 in (62.5 cm)
Diameter: 10.5 in (27 cm)

This Pâte-sur-pâte porcelain vase from the late Qing Dynasty Circa 1870. This blue and white vase, with a spreading lip above an ovoid body, is beautifully decorated with Buddhist emblems, flowers and bats.
Pâte-sur-pâte is a French term that means paste on paste and refers to a painstaking technique of making porcelain through the application of layers of liquid clay to create beautiful relief designs on an unfired, unglazed and usually coloured body, by applying layers of (usually) white porcelain. Two centuries before the development of pâte-sur-pâte ("paste on paste") at Sèvres, the late Ming Dynasty Chinese potters were experimenting with a bold decoration technique using brushed slip referred to as Zhangzhou or "Swatow" ware.
