CAUCASIAN CARPET

Circa late 19th century
Handwoven, wool, natural dyes
103.75 x 52 in (263.5 x 132 cm)

A playful and naïve carpet from the Transcaucases region between the Black Sea and Caspian Sea. The brilliant red central panel is covered with a diamond shaped lattice. The space within each lattice diamond is filled with an eight-pointed star, probably inspired by the well-known Italian painter, Carlo Crivelli, from the Renaissance period. The wide ivory ground major border is filled with stacked crab shaped icons. Two narrow minor borders flank this major border, and each of them is filled with dice like symbols. Outstanding silky fleecy high altitude wool.

There is a black fabric sleeve sown on the back of the carpet in case it is desired to be hung
