A South Persian carpet, probably woven by a Luri artisan. The composition includes a brilliant madder red field with a large diamond medallion in the centre, flanked by an array of sixteen unique Memling gul motifs in different sizes and colours. The Memling gul is named after Hans Memling, the Flemish painter from the 15th century who used to paint these icons in his paintings as carpet covers for church altars. The composition is framed with a narrow zigzag lightning border and an outer mountain peaks border.
