A rare carpet from the northern Caucasus mountains region between the Black and Caspian Seas. The composition features two large vertically stacked medallions woven on a deep red field. The medallions contain abstract flower representations that are sometimes referred to as butterflies. Three of the four corner spandrels contain solitary icons that look like flags and the fourth contains a crab like flower. The major border is filled with alternating leaf and calyx iconography and the two minor borders are adorned with reciprocal mountain peaks. Glossy silky pile of rich high mountain wool.
