Born in the village of Jitwarpur in Bihar, Baua Devi emerged as one of the pioneers of Madhubani painting, helping to bring this ancient folk art to people globally. Her talent was first noticed at the age of 12 by Mumbai-based artist Bhaskar Kulkarni, who encouraged her to accompany him to the National Crafts Museum in New Delhi in 1966.
