Rajput princes prided themselves on hunting. "Hunting became an administrative necessity and a symbol of courage, bravery, power and authority for the kings of the states of Rajasthan in the Mughal period. The love for hunting and their skill in hunting sport was often the chief occupation of Bundi rulers." (Sodhi, Bundi School, p. 71)

Describing another painting depicting a hunting scene from the same time period, Tandan writes of artists who "successfully employed the device of opposing diagonals to heighten the sense of drama. The proud stallion and ferocious Saluki dogs are in complete rapport with their master." (Tandan, Indian Miniature Painting, p. 110) These elements are beautifully illustrated in the present lot.
