The Tandan Collection

This may possibly be a portrait of Maharaja Kumwar Shree Zalim Singhji of Jodhpur, who is out for a leisurely ride, accompanied by his attendants. This type of portrait was traditional in the Rajput courts during the 18th century. It shows the king riding on a stallion bedecked in full equestrian regalia. The ceremonial ride by the king is depicted with all the symbols of power and status associated with him. His unadorned attendants walk alongside, carrying white morchals and a fan, both symbols of kingship. The turbans of the attendants which are smaller in shape, size and decoration, from the ornate and decorated one of the king, are another symbolic indicator of status.
