PROVENANCE
The Tandan Collection

This nineteenth century portrait of a princess from the Jodhpur royal family has the "long uptilted eyes," lengthened nose and eyebrows typical of women's portraiture which formed the basis of a "special Jodhpur idiom." "By the mid-eighteenth century, Mughal influence had led to greater delicacy and... the cultivation of romance prompted a sensitive rendering of female physiques." (Archer, Indian Miniatures)

Relaxing against a bolster, the princess enjoys a drink from a small cup. Around her is an assortment of silverware, cordials, dishes containing paan, rosewater sprinklers, fruits and sweets, which are arrayed around her as symbols of luxury and status.
