PROVENANCE
The Tandan Collection

The mistress, who is believed to be a lady of the Jodhpur royal court, is depicted clothed only in a diaphanous drape, seated on a stool. She regards herself in a mirror, while she is tended to by a group of female attendants. They bear water pots and gold caskets with scented oils, while an attendant to the far right fans her with a morchal of peacock feathers. The white arch bears the coldness of marble, and stands in sharp contrast to the quiet grey of the night sky. This miniature was painted circa 1830, during the reign of Maharaja Man Singh and contains all the elements of the mature Jodhpur miniature style. It is very probable that it was commissioned as a gift for the Maharaja for a special occasion.
