PROVENANCE
The Tandan Collection

The subject matter of this unusual Deccani miniature from the late eighteenth century is very different from the themes typically favoured by artists during this time. It shows an ascetic seated under a tree with a rosary. Within the lush foliage of the tree are four pairs of birds. Perhaps representing love, they are juxtaposed against the lone ascetic who is seated below, seemingly unaware of their presence. A predatory red bird, perhaps symbolic of hunting, is perched on a stand, and watches the ascetic in meditation. The vast expanse of a pale blue sky surrounds the ascetic, whose dhoti blends into the colour field.
