A VERY RARE AND BREATHTAKING KUTCH SILVER CRUET, MAWJI RAGHAVJI, BHUJ

The circular frame on six paw feet, the frame with six supports to fit six pepper shakers and a central salt bowl with salt spoon and a decorative handle. Each piece is decorated with a foliate motive and stamped 'M.R. BHUJ'.

Mawji Raghavji came from a caste of cobblers who were assured the freedom to switch professions under the protection of the East India Company. Like Oomersi, Raghavji combined talent and skill with perseverance to gain recognition. His particular style is clearly identifiable by the appearance of both, humans and animals in his designs. They are accentuating with intricate floral motifs. Reptilian forms too, feature in his work. In 1903, Raghavji participated in "A House of Wonder: Silverware at the Delhi Exhibition of 1903), where he was awarded a bronze medal for his piece-Candlestick No. 1253.
