A RARE AND MAGNIFICENT SILVER REPOUSSE TRAY, MAWJI RAGHAVJI, BHUJ

A highly decorative silver tray of circular form with an intricate pierced fish and vine border, superbly chased interior depicting various 'shikar' or hunting scenes such as a boar hunt, a richly caparisoned elephant and lions in combat, a tiger shoot, a lion attacking a shikari, decorated with a folite design standing on stylised peacock and parrot feet. Stamped 'M.R. BHUJ' on the reverse.

Mawji Raghavji came from a caste of cobblers who were assured the freedom to switch professions under the protection of the East India Company. Like Oomersi, Raghavji combined talent and skill with perseverance to gain recognition. His particular style is clearly identifiable by the appearance of both, humans and animals in his designs. They are accentuating with intricate floral motifs. Reptilian forms too, feature in his work. In 1903, Raghavji participated in "A House of Wonder: Silverware at the Delhi Exhibition of 1903), where he was awarded a bronze medal for his piece-Candlestick No. 1253.
