Jagdish Swaminathan's artistic concerns centred around finding a vocabulary through India's culture and practices. He rejected art whose practices were derived from the West and situated in an Indian context, arguing that they were merely hybridised. He turned to primitivism and tantric element to mould an idiom representative of a new India.

This work was made shortly after Swaminathan set up the Roopankar Museum of Fine Arts in 1981...
