This painting is a part of the Paris Suite, one of the 4 suites painted for Husain’s book titled ‘88 Husains in Oils, 2003’. The book documents a series of 88 paintings by Husain created over a period of five months in four cities across the world: Mumbai, New Delhi, Kolkata and Paris. In an interview with Khalid Mohamed the artist says, “The 88 oils represent the essence of my life. While doing them I felt like I have mastered the technique, which is on the tip of my fingers. The challenge throughout was in capturing the different moments. That was the struggle, a struggle that will last as long as I live.”

Husain’s credibility with the human body depicting it in angular curvatures has possessed, co-opted and transfigured idioms of modern Indian art. This painting has distinctive positive and negative spaces, playing with shadows and contours, which are emphasised by the neutral shades.
