For several decades, Krishen Khanna has stood as a towering figure in modern Indian art—a true Renaissance man whose practice has been shaped by a panoply of influences spanning art history, music, poetry and lived experience. With the human figure at the forefront, his oeuvre is populated with diverse subjects including his iconic bandwallas, migrant labourers, and mythological figures. He has distinguished himself not only as a painter but as a deeply empathetic storyteller whose art offers a nuanced reflection on everyday life, the theatre of human relationships, and the complex history of post-Independence India.
As Krishen marks his centenary year, Saffronart is honoured to have shared part of his extraordinary journey. We have had the privilege of knowing him not only as an artist but also as a friend, mentor, guide, and collaborator. We are proud to present an exhibition of his works, celebrating a hundred years of a life shaped by colour, form, and a relentless creative spirit. This exhibition brings together works that represent key themes that have defined the artist’s decades-long career, notably his iconic bandwallas. These include important mixed-media works reproduced in limited editions of three large-scale prints. These prints have been meticulously hand-painted, transforming them into unique pieces of art while preserving the essence of the original drawings. The collection also features digital artwork, paintings that have been reimagined as tapestries, sculptures, bespoke jewellery, and one-of-a-kind wristwatches centred around his bandwallas, a subject that has become synonymous with his celebrated career and legacy.
