Art under the hammer

The oncoming summer months promise an exciting time for connoisseurs of art. Reason? Saffronart is all geared up to present its annual online summer auction which will be held next month.

Sunday evening unveiled a preview of a select collection of these paintings at Hotel Taj Mahal. The cocktail-session organised was a perfect opportunity for art-lovers to take a closer look at the works before being part of some exciting bidding. Needless to say, the evening saw 'em all discussing the pieces on display with animated interest.

Amongst the works seen here were those of several leading modern artists such as F N Souza, S H Raza, M F Husain, Tyeb Mehta and Ram Kumar as well as leading contemporary artists such as Nataraj Sharma, Rekha Rodwitiya and Jitish Kallat.... Although there were several works of stylistic and historical significance, those worth special noticing were the rare early architectural work by Ram Kumar, Husain's Ardhnareshwar, FN Souza's range of 'heads' on board, canvas and paper and, of course, Raza's painting made in 1975 Jaisalmer!

Present at the preview were industrialist Ashish Saraf, artists Sunanina Anand, Subroto Kundu, Gopi Gajwani and Paresh Maity, the young and attractive director of Usha International Chhaya Shriram looking chic in a simple black salwar kameez, Dabur's V C Burman, Patrick Bowring from Bowring's and many others.... Guests enjoyed a wide variety of snacks and cocktails which were doing the rounds as they went around appreciating the art on display....
