14th May, 2012

After auctioning jewellery, carpets, rugs, men’s collectibles and antiques, Mumbai-based online auction house Saffronart is now bringing small-format works of art under the hammer.

Next week’s auction will have 60 works of art by 30 contemporary Indian artists such as Jogen Chowdhury, Sudhir Patwardhan, FN Souza, Satish Gujral and Somnath Hore. While Ram Kumar’s untitled abstract work, an acrylic on canvas, is being pegged around Rs 5 lakh to Rs 7 lakh, bidding for works like that of Delhi-based Himmat Shah begins at Rs 25,000 to Rs 35,000. “The main attraction, in fact, could be a rare work by Jogen Chowdhury,” says Saffronart’s editor and art specialist, Nishad Avari. Chowdhury’s artwork is priced from Rs 40,000 to 60,000. The 24-hour auction will be held on May 16 at 8 pm (IST) and the pieces have been sourced from private collectors, informs Avari.
