Wood and steel

India, 19th century

Diameter 24.5 in (61.25 cm)

Dhal or shields of this type were often painted or lacquered and had metal bosses applied where the handles were fastened on the reverse. Between the handles, there is usually a cushion, on which knuckles may rest.

The present shield bears a black and white floral pattern all around the edge and centre. In the middle of the shield a flower on a red background is represented, finely contrasting the green colour of the rest of the shield.
