Opaque watercolour heightened with gold on paper

Kutch or Nagaur, c. 1750

Image: 12.5 x 9.5 in (31.25 x 23.75 cm)
Folio: 15 x 12 in (37.5 x 30 cm)

The inscription on the verso of the painting helps identifying the main character of the painting Prince Rao Lakhpatji. It reads:

Bhuj nagar ri ku(n)var lakhori surat ro pano Accepted this portrait of Prince Lakho of Bhuj town

This painting depicts Prince Rao Lakhpatji (1707-61) riding a bay horse surrounded by four attendants. One of them at the back carries a morchal, a whisk made of peacock feathers, an emblem of royalty, while the other holds a fan which acts as a halo for the prince. On the other side, one of the attendants at the front carries a hookah perhaps made of glass with gold decoration, while the other one leads the procession holding a staff.

The Prince is wearing a brocaded orange jama. Maharao Lakhpatji (r.1741- 60) was probably the most important and innovative of the rulers of Kutch. He was a pivotal figure in the development of Kutch painting of which little was known prior to the 18th century. It is thought that Kutch paintings were majorly influenced by Mewar and Malwa with whom Kutch had both strong political and matrimonial links.

Latkhpatji was the first Kutch ruler to visit the Mughal court, attend the durbar of the Emperor Muhammad Shah, and in 1757, he also obtained the royal title of Mirza Maharao. Maharaja Bakhat Singh visited Rao Lakhpatji of Kutch while he was ruler of Nagaur (between 1740 and his accession to the Jodhpur throne in 1751). A group of artists went to Kutch with him and recorded his visit and probably painted the present portrait of Rao Lakhpatji.
