Opaque watercolour heightened with gold on paper

Mewar, c. 1754

9 x 6.5 in (22.5 x 16.25 cm)

In this miniature, the youthful Maharana Raj Singh II is portrayed with a visitor who is identifiable as Umed Singh of Bundi.

Maharana Raj Singh II (1754-1761) succeeded his father Pratap Singh (r. 1751-54) at the young age of ten, and few dated paintings seem to have been executed after 1756 reflecting that he could no longer afford the upkeep of the court atelier at Mewar. But, given his age, he may also not have been an enthusiastic patron of the arts. He died at the age of eighteen, possibly of poisoning.
