Silver and turquoise

20th century
Himachal Pradesh

The three circular plaques of this rare silver repoussé shawl fibula or brooch, known as a 'tomukch' or 'bamno', represent the 'triratna' or three gems of Buddhism - Buddha, Dharma and Sangha. These pins were used to fasten the two ends of a 'dhori' or shawl. This particular fibula is accented with turquoise, and suspends a three-part tassel pendant, including a representation of the 'shrivatsa' or endless knot representative of the Buddha's endless compassion and wisdom.
