Born in 1970, Ram Singh Urveti is a Gond artist by profession. Related by marriage to the well-known Gond artist Jangarh Singh Shyam, Urveti spent five years living with him in Bhopal and learning the nuances of his style of painting. Urveti turns to Nature as the primary inspiration in his work, and his favourite subject is the tree, and what it represents. Painting various forms of flora and fauna, Urveti communicates his sense of the universe as a branching, fruiting and self-extending energy. Today, Urveti's work is well known and has won the artist many honours including the 2001 Kali Das Award and the South Central Zone Cultural Centre Award for Tribal Art in 1998. His book, 'The Night life of Trees', a collaborative effort with Durga Bai and Bhajju Shyam, was honoured with the prestigious Italian Bolognaragazzi Award.
