Unlike the coloured Mithila paintings known as 'bharni', Urmila Devi practices in the 'goidana' style, which originated from the tattoo art of the Dusadh community of the Madhubani region. Having learnt the art from her mother-in-law Chano Devi, Urmila Devi has painted in this style for more than forty years. Her work has been exhibited widely in India and abroad, and have won her a State Award from the Government of Bihar in 1985.
