Having learnt to paint from her husband Jangarh Singh Shyam, Nankusia Shyam developed a keen interest in her natural surroundings which she began to showcase in her paintings. She often paints the animals that she vividly remembers from her childhood days spent in the village of Sonpuri. Currently, the artist works in Bharat Bhavan, Bhopal, where her husband used to work. Nankusia has travelled extensively, exhibiting her work in Japan, France, Sri Lanka and the UAE besides India. She has illustrated the children's book 'Bulli and the Tiger', and won several awards for her work.
