The 'makara', a mythic water monster combining the features of a crocodile, elephant and fish, is the vehicle of the goddess Ganga, the Ganges river personified, and Lord Varuna, the god of terrestrial waters. Its magical powers relate to the fertility of aquatic life. 'Makara' heads frequently appear as a protome at the terminals of penannular bracelets and anklets, including the present lot from Himachal Pradesh.
