Bhuta Mask

The word Bhuta literally translated means spirit. The concept of Bhuta worship was prevalent in a big way in the Northern part of Kerala and neighboring Karnataka. The ritual involved pleasing the deities with various dances and offerings. The dancer would often wear masks representing the particular Bhuta.

This particular mask is one such specimen. The medium is bronze. The piece is a powerful one; the eyes are large and expressive and the moustache is prominent and is well cast. At the ends it even protrudes out of the base. The teeth are prominent and the tongue is shown sticking out. The hood on top signifies Nagas or snakes. The design of the ear ornaments is quite typical of the folk tradition.

A good expression, condition and a very fine natural patina make this an appealing example from the earlier phase of the Bhuta tradition.
