This figural carpet from Kashan depicts King Suleiman the Magnificent of the Ottoman Empire was the10th ruler of the Ottoman dynasty, he ruled for 46 years which ended in the year 1566.There are many stories that surround his long rule and one which is depicted here; that he had 'jinns' or magical beings who worked for him to ensure the smooth functioning of his empire.
The inclusion of figures only goes to show the high level of skill of the weaver, for it is not easy to capture the human or animal form realistically in a hand knotted carpet. Also noteworthy is thecalligraphic texts in the borders, again it would require the hands of a master weaver to achieve the difficult cursive formation of the Arabic text.
