Early 20th century
Approx. 13ft 4in x 12ft (408.9 x 365.7 cms)
Wool carpet

This large carpet woven in Lahore is impressive for its size and has an unusual square shape. The color palette is restrained;deep maroon field offsets flowers in greens and beiges and the border is again in pale cream.Three rows of curvilinear tendrils with floral patterns that lean towards the natural world than purely a design motif fill the carpet adding a sense of drama. The overall treatment of motif is the use of scale rather than the intricacy.
Lahore has a long tradition of carpet weaving, Akbar is said to have set up carpet weaving workshops during the 15th century in Agra and here.
