Bhuri Bai

Untitled

Signed in Devnagari (lower right)
Acrylic on canvas
47.5 x 60.5 in (120.6 x 153.6 cm)

Bhuri Bai started painting at a very young age, completing her first mural at the age of ten. When she was young, Bhuri Bai would visit the local fairs that travelled to her village, and the colours she saw at these events inspired her to paint on paper and canvas using a distinctive, vibrant palette. In the present lot, she has painted a group of patterned fish, crocodiles and turtles seemingly floating weightlessly in space. The central turtle seems to be guarding her eggs against attack from the predator crocodiles, some of which have been successful in their raid of the nest. The bright hues of the animals are offset by the earthy reddish-brown ground.
